Patio Materials Compared: Stone, Porcelain, Concrete, and Gravel

Sandstone, limestone, slate, and granite have a timeless look and every slab is unique. Some stones, such as softer sandstones, are porous and can stain or grow algae, requiring regular cleaning and sometimes sealing. Granite and slate are harder wearing.

Outdoor porcelain tiles are dense, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. They are available in finishes that imitate stone and wood. Installation requires specialist skills and the right adhesive, and good-quality porcelain with an anti-slip rating is important outdoors.

Concrete pavers are usually the most affordable paving option and come in many shapes and colours. They are durable but can fade over time. Block paving is a common choice for driveways because it handles vehicle loads well.

Gravel is cheap, quick to lay, and lets rainwater drain through. It suits informal and cottage gardens. It needs edging to stay in place, can be harder to walk on or push furniture across, and needs occasional raking and topping up.

Whatever you choose, the patio will only last if it is laid on a properly compacted sub-base with a slight fall to direct water away from the house. Spending more on groundwork and a little less on the surface is usually the wiser trade-off.
